How Does Defrost Heater Work

A defrost heater is a crucial component in refrigeration systems, especially in freezers and refrigerators, designed to prevent the buildup of frost on the evaporator coils. Frost buildup can significantly reduce the efficiency of these systems, ultimately affecting their cooling capacity.

 

The defrost heater operates on the principle of heating the evaporator coils at specific intervals to melt any accumulated frost. There are primarily two types of defrost heaters commonly used: electric and hot gas.

 

Electric defrost heaters are typically found in household refrigerators and freezers. These heaters are resistive elements made of materials like Nichrome, which have high electrical resistance and can generate heat when an electrical current passes through them. They are strategically placed near or directly on the evaporator coils.

 

When the refrigerator operates in its cooling cycle, the evaporator coils extract heat from the interior, causing moisture in the air to condense and freeze on the coils. Over time, this forms a layer of frost. To prevent excessive buildup, the defrost timer or control board activates the defrost cycle at regular intervals, typically every 6 to 12 hours, depending on the model.

 

Upon initiating the defrost cycle, the control system cuts off the compressor and activates the defrost heater. The electric current flows through the heater, generating heat that warms up the evaporator coils. As the coils heat up, the accumulated frost begins to melt, turning into water droplets.

 

To prevent damage to the system and ensure efficient defrosting, a defrost thermostat monitors the temperature of the evaporator coils. Once the temperature reaches a certain level, signaling that the frost has melted adequately, the thermostat signals the control system to stop the defrost cycle.

 

The melted water from the frost runs down the evaporator coils and into a drain pan located beneath the appliance. From there, it typically evaporates due to the heat produced by the compressor during the regular cooling cycle.

 

Hot gas defrost systems, on the other hand, are more commonly used in larger commercial refrigeration units. In these systems, instead of using an electric heater, the refrigerant itself is employed to defrost the coils. During the defrost cycle, the refrigeration system reverses its operation.

 

A valve diverts the hot, high-pressure refrigerant gas from the compressor directly into the evaporator coils. As the hot gas flows through the coils, it transfers its heat to the frost, causing it to melt. The resulting water is drained away, and once the defrost cycle is complete, the valve redirects the refrigerant back to its usual cooling circuit.

 

Both electric and hot gas defrost systems serve the same purpose of eliminating frost buildup on evaporator coils but utilize different mechanisms to achieve this goal.

 

Regular maintenance and proper functioning of the defrost heater are essential for the efficient operation of refrigeration systems. Malfunctioning heaters can lead to excessive frost buildup, decreased cooling efficiency, and potential damage to the appliance.

 

Defrost heaters play a crucial role in maintaining the optimal performance of refrigeration systems by preventing frost accumulation on evaporator coils. Whether through electric resistance or hot gas, these heaters ensure that the coils remain free from frost, allowing the system to operate efficiently and maintain the desired temperature within the appliance.
